Teppanyaki
Sara, her cousin Thomas from Germany, her sister Lisa and I, all went to eat Teppanyaki last night. I had never done this before and the only thing I've heard of it previously was that they cook the food in front of you and throw food at you. We were there quite early so we were the first to be served. As the night went on, it looked like they only had 1 chef working that night so we were lucky. He turned out to be a very cheerful fellow and seemed to enjoy his work.
The chef started by heating up the hot plate and cleaning it with some wine and a rag. Then the cooking started! The aroma of the cooking food was mouth watering. And the speed and accuracy with which the chef did his job had me mesmerized. Especially the bit where he peeled the heads off the king prawns and gutted then in one smooth action. And the taste, superb.
Just when we thought all that he was going to do was cook, he asked us if we wanted to play a game. We said yes and that was when the fun started! It kicked off with catching a raw egg in a rice bowl as he flicked it off the hot plate. Everyone passed that test without too much trouble. Then came catching pieces of fried egg with your mouth. We all passed except for Thomas who failed on 2 attempts. On his third attempt, instead of flicking a single piece of fried egg into the air, he released a flurry of fried egg pieces straight at Thomas's body. Taken by surprise with only a small rice bowl in hand, Thomas had no chance. It was a hilarious scene watching him furiously trying to catch all the egg pieces flicked at him and failing miserably :D
The last thing to be cooked was the fried rice. After the rice was cooked, it was packed tightly into the rice bowls. The final "game" for the evening was to catch 4 rice bowls. The first 3 were empty and the 4th one was filled with rice. You had to catch them in succession on top of each other so as to make a stack of bowls in your hand. Sara went first and caught them all, much to her surprise. I went next and with my last bowl, the chef decided to flip it through the air instead of throwing it upright. I caught it, also to my surprise. Lisa was next and had the toughest test. Instead of throwing the bowl with the rice in it, he threw just the rice. It came out and soared through the air in the shape of a bowl but exploded on Lisa's shirt as she only managed to get a quater of the rice into her bowl. hahaha she was so shocked. Thomas received his last bowl with a bit of side spin and passed admirably.
Overall it was a great experience. I think I'll take my family there one day...
