A Great Day

I had a great day today. Today was our Product Development Department's sports day. Which meant we would only work half a day and then go down to the local park for a free lunch and some organised sporting activities. Lunch was modest, which included roast lamb, beef and pork on a spit. After lunch we got started on the games. Everyone in the department was allocated a team which was roughly based on which section they worked in. I was in Software Engineers Team 1, as we have a large number of software engineers so we were split into 2 teams. There were 5 other teams and we had to play 4 different sports throughout the afternoon.

Our first match was touch footy against the Verification/Validation team. Tell you what, playing touch footy right after lunch is not such a good idea. But we won the game 3 - 0 after being one up at half time. I scored the first try. Next was soccer against the Mechanical Engineers team. It was nil all after the first half but we romped home 7 - 0. I scored 4 goals which was probably more than I'd ever scored in soccer in my entire life. At this point in time, our team and the Software Engineers Team 2 were both undefeated. Our third match was Volleyball versus the Industrial Design/Research & Technology team. We narrowly lost that one 30 - 28 after leading most of the match. We heard news that the Software Engineers Team 2 had won their softball match and thus are the only undefeated team. We thought we'd lost it then. Our last match was softball against Sustaining Engineering team. We won that 14 - 7 and the good news came that Software Engineers team 2 had lost their volleyball match. This meant the winning team would be either them or us and is calculated from "for and against". Because we only marginally lost volleyball we ended up on top! Woohoo! Our team got a trophy and we even poored beer into it and drank from it. :D

Come Clean

Last night, whilst I was driving home, I tuned into 2DayFM and they had this segment called Come Clean. It's where someone calls in and confesses something to their partner on national radio. Well, this lady called in and confessed to her boyfriend that their still born baby is not his. It was terrible. The guy was gutted and what's worse, he didn't even know he was on radio until the presenters spoke up. I thought this was such a cruel segment. So much so that I wrote an email to the presenters when I got home. I'm generally not the person to write in and complain about things I hear on radio but I felt this time they're really going too far. My guess is that my email probably got deleted when I they received it. Here's the letter:

Hi

Can you pass this onto the producers? Thanks.

I was in the car listening to 2DayFM just then and was listening to your Come Clean segment. I must say, this segment is disgusting. For the sake of entertainment and ratings, you guys are making people's lives/relationships worse than they need to be! Fair enough these people have done something bad which they want to confess, but for you guys to facilitate that to happen on national radio is just plain wrong.

I hope you guys sleep well tonight with the knowledge that some poor guy has just been told by his girlfriend that their baby is not his, on national radio! Put yourself in their shoes. Would you like your partner to do the same thing to you? You probably think I'm just bitching, like that woman who called up to say pretty much the same thing
that I have said. But ask yourself this, have you done that couple more harm than good? I think you'll find that the couple is more traumatised by this segment than if she told him in private. By the way, there's not a chance I'll be tuning into 2DayFm at this time slot ever again.
